Tuvalu toilet trial for Marshall Islands

4:49 am on 3 July 2012

A type of composting toilet that's been installed in 40 homes in Tuvalu is now being trialled on the Marshall Islands atoll of Majuro.

The manager of Tuvalu's integrated water resource management programme has just left the republic after overseeing the construction of the almost 5-thousand US dollar demonstration toilet.

Pisi Seleganiu says the unit, at Laura on the northern side of Majuro, has attracted a lot of interest.

"Some of the neighbours who normally come in every day and look at the demonstration site, I've been through some awareness programmes with all of these families who are really keen to have a composting toilet. We have quite numbers of families who now enquire to have a composting toilet in Laura."

Pisi Seleganiu says Tuvalu is still awaiting the funding to provide every family with a composting toilet.
