Singapore ship held amid America Samoa pollution probe

5:30 pm on 27 June 2012

A freighter flying a Singapore flag has been detained in American Samoa by the US Coast Guard for possible pollution violations.

During an inspection, the Coast Guard found problems with the Southern Lily 2's oil and water separator, which is meant to ensure only clean water is discharged.

Coast Guard Lieutenant Steve Caskey says they later found other faults.

A customs hold has now been placed on the vessel until the Coast Guard inspection is completed.

Two Coast Guard officers are flying in from Honolulu to assist in the investigation.
