Samisoni seeks changes to bail to campaign in Fiji elections

The prominent Fiji politician and businesswoman Mere Samisoni is seeking changes to her bail conditions so she can campaign as a candidate in the 2014 elections.

She appeared before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili on Tuesday on charges of urging political violence between September and December last year.

The ousted SDL MP's bail conditions include having to report to police three times a week.

Her lawyer, Peter Williams QC, says she has other valid reasons for the bail variation and is unlikely to abscond..

"She wants to be able to move around. At the present moment there are restrictions on places she can go to and can't go to but she wants to be able to move around so she can get prepared for those elections."

Peter Williams says the prosecution has been given seven days to reply.

He says the defence is also seeking a court order to have excluded statements allegedly made by Mrs Samisoni when she was held in custody.
