Vanuatu president suspends police commissioner

3:53 pm on 18 June 2012

The president of Vanuatu Iolou Johnson Abbil, has suspended the commissioner of police just days after a Supreme Court ruling found Joshua Bong should resume his position at the head of the police.

Mr Bong says he was forced to take leave by the chairman of the Police Service Commission a few weeks ago following allegations of incompetency.

Mr Bong applied for a judicial review and following the ruling in his favour last week, attempted to resume his position but the acting police commissioner Arthur Caulton, refused to step aside.

Last Friday, Mr Bong filed a police complaint against Mr Caulton and the head of the Police Service Commission Tony Ata, claiming they were inciting mutiny.

The President's office remains silent on the reason for the chief of police's suspension.

Mr Bong has been stood down on full pay for three months - his contract is due to end in October.
