Vanuatu ACP meeting told EU committed to fight poverty

The President of the European Council of Ministers says the EU is committed to the goal of eradicating poverty in the developing world.

The joint council of ministers of the European Union and the African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries begins its meeting in Vanuatu today.

Megan Whelan reports from Port Vila.

"The president, Denmark's minister for development cooperation Christian Friis Bach, says despite the crisis in the eurozone, Europe is committed to its aid spending. He says talk on development co-operation over the next two days will be in the spirit of transparency and accountability. Mr Friis Bach says he is pleased to see the topic of economic partnership is gaining momentum. He says if negotiations over the EPAs can be concluded it will strengthen the EU-ACP partnership."
