The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas has been told that it has a 50 percent chance that it will be hit by a destructive typhoon this year.

A Guam meteorologist Charles 'Chip' Guard predicts the destructive typhoon will occur on Saipan and Tinian in September, October or November, and on Rota in October, November or December.

Mr Guard says the three islands may also have one to two additional typhoon threats during the same period.

He says the destructive typhoon is likely to be between Category One and Three.

Mr Guard says the northern islands of Agrihan, Pagan, or Alamagan will likely experience one direct hit from a typhoon.
