The provincial administration in Papua New Guinea's Western Province has begun relief efforts for more than 26,000 people affected by floods in the South Fly area.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that this figure is expected to increase in the coming days following prolonged heavy rainfall.

The South Fly Provincial Administration has reportedly donated about 200,000 US dollars to the affected villagers for relief purposes.
