Calls in American Samoa for lower corporate tax rates

10:38 am on 30 May 2012

A candidate for governor in American Samoa Save Liuato Tuitele is calling for the lowering of corporate tax rates in the territory.

Save says taxation is one of the obstacles businesses face in American Samoa.

He says the territory has the highest corporate tax rate in the Pacific of up to 44 percent while Samoa's corporate tax is around 29 percent and that of other islands is about 30 to 35 percent.

If elected he and running mate Tofoitaufa Sandra King Young say they will lower the tax rate and provide other incentives.

"Not only that, we also hope to change it to allow our businesses on the island to get more money to expand their company and to create more jobs and that is the only way to create jobs, is for them to get money to expand."
