Vanuatu arrests 50 people linked to prison escapees

6:10 pm on 29 May 2012

Almost 50 people have been arrested in Vanuatu for allegedly harbouring escaped prisoners.

Over the weekend, police arrested two more of the seven high-risk prisoners who have been on the run after a series of break-outs.

The acting police Commissioner, Arthur Caulton, says the people harbouring them are now in custody and will appear in court again next month.

"We have informed people way in advance that if you are caught harbouring prisoners you will be arrested, so we will continue to arrest people if we find that they are still harbouring the rest of the escapees, so that is the way forward at the moment."

Arthur Caulton says he understands the two prisoners were injured while being apprehended, but refused to comment further.
