The Maritime Safety Authority in Solomon Islands is warning shipping companies to look out for debris from the sunken Solfish 001.

Investigations are underway into the sinking of the passenger and cargo vessel about 100 kilometres north of Santa Cruz last week.

The acting director of the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre, Brian Aonima says a warning has been issued to shipping operators in the area and foreign vessels to look out for and to avoid debris.

"Because the debris is coming up, more types of fuels will be coming up and also a lot of objects from the boat and cargo they were bringing and have floated."

Brian Aonima says investigators are still trying to ascertain why the ship sank.
