New Caledonia dengue outbreak spreads

2:24 pm on 22 May 2012

New Caledonia's dengue outbreak has spread across the territory, with more than 100 people now affected by the disease.

The health authorities says dengue has been diagnosed mostly in the Noumea area but cases have been reported from provincial centres up north as well.

There is concern that the disease will spread further because boarding schools closed last weekend for a two-week break, with students being possible carriers of the disease.

People are advised to seek medical care as soon as they experience the first possible symptoms, such as high fever.
