A former Papua New Guinea prime minister, Sir Mekere Morauta, says he won't seek another parliamentary term in next month's general election.
Sir Mekere was first elected to Parliament in 1997 as the member for Moresby North West and became the Prime Minister two years later when the country was in dire financial straits.
A qualified economist, he had been secretary of the Department of Finance, the managing director of the PNG Banking Corporation and then the governor of the Reserve Bank before entering Parliament.
In the three years of his prime ministership Sir Mekere oversaw reforms that have had a pivotal effect on the country in the subsequent ten years.
The reforms included the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties, which has been credited with bringing political stability to the country.
Sir Mekere has told his PNG Party that the changes set the foundation for the success that Sir Michael Somare and the National Alliance enjoyed once they came to power in 2002.
But he says they corrupted the system.
