Mass protest planned in PNG

2:46 pm on 23 April 2012

Reports from PNG say unionists, students, churches and civil society organisations are planning a massive nationwide protest over moves to defer elections and the government's controversial Judicial Conduct law.

The NBC report says regional groups have also been mobilised to march on provincial government headquarters.

Major services such as water and electricity in Port Moresby are expected to be affected, as workers are being called on to join in the protest.

Several thousand people gathered in the capital earlier this month to voice concerns over government plans to defer the five-yearly elections and the law to suspend judges.
