11:16 am on 20 April 2012

The groundbreaking ceremony has been held for the construction of Fiji's casino and convention centre on Denarau near Nadi.

The event was addressed by the interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who says it's his government priority to provide for the prosperity for the nation and to build livelihoods.

The casino will be built in a partnership with the US company, One Hundred Sands, and is scheduled to open in October next year.

The construction is expected to cost 160 million US dollars and employ 900 people.

Once built, the casino is expected to offer 700 jobs.

The casino company has said it hopes the proceeds will provide higher education for young people.
