Fiji regime to assist flood-affected sugar farmers

6:08 pm on 17 April 2012

The Fiji interim government says it will give sugar farmers affected by the recent floods money to replant their crops.

The information ministry says the assistance scheme will provide 1,400 US dollars per hectare to replant sugarcane.

It says the Sugar Industry Tribunal, the Fiji Sugar Corporation and the Cane Growers Council have assessed which farms are eligible.

The interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, who is also the sugar minister, says the government must ensure these farmers have every opportunity to quickly replant crops and are not tied down by financial burdens.
