High profile PNG civil society activist dumped as leader

3:10 pm on 16 April 2012

Papua New Guinea's Coalition of Civil Society Organisations has rejected prominent activist Noel Anjo as its president.

The newspaper, The National, quotes a founding member of the network, John Kerenga Gugl, as saying they had sacked Mr Anjo after he compromised his position by receiving gifts from politicians.

Philip Kepan has been appointed as the new president.

Mr Anjo denies the allegations, saying members of the network are trying to discredit him for their own gains.

Last week, Mr Anjo accused people with political agendas of hijacking the large rally against government plans for deferral of elections.
