Voter education workshop being held in Vanuatu

3:11 pm on 16 April 2012

A workshop on electoral education is being held in Vanuatu this week to boost voter registration for this year's general elections.

More than 25 participants, including registration officers from the six provinces, are attending the three-day event in Port Vila to learn about the process and importance of voting.

The chairman of the Electoral Commission, John Taleo, says participants are expected to take the information back to their provinces and convince people to register.

"We need to broaden their knowledge to understand the rights and the benefits of the people of Vanuatu. We need them to understand how to go in and pass over the information to the people. I mean the election is very important in Vanuatu. Voting is not compulsory, therefore people don't care in one sense."

John Taleo says the elections will be held at the end of the year but an official date is yet to be announced.
