China is to give Fiji more than five million US dollars in aid and help with its rice industry under new agreements between the two countries.

China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming has made his first visit to Fiji and met the interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

The two signed off on funding for flood relief and the development of a Fiji government initiative to develop the rice industry on Vanua Levu.

China is to provide eight technical experts who will conduct a feasibility study for the project.

Mr Chen also discussed opportunities for strengthening trade and economic ties with Fiji during the four-day visit.

The Fiji regime says it welcomes the visit amid efforts to expand its relations with the international community.
