Uncertainty over Vanuatu election date

2:23 pm on 10 April 2012

There is uncertainty in Vanuatu over this year's election date which had earlier been advised as October the 30th.

The electoral office says it received instructions from the office of the prime minister to retract it because no date has been officially approved and gazetted by the president.

Two months ago, the acting Principal Electoral Officer Guilain Malessas said the election date was October the 30th and that it had been endorsed by the government.

It is now unclear when the election of the new 52-member parliament will be held.

Political parties have already held their congresses to endorse the names of their election candidates.

The last election was in September 2008.
