American Samoa government overspends fuel budget

12:26 pm on 10 April 2012

The American Samoa budget director Malemo Tausaga has warned departments and agencies that the government's fuel budget for Fiscal Year 2012 is now in the red.

The budget law includes 150,000 US dollars for fuel, but as of April 5th, the account was overrun by 82,000 dollars

Mr Malemo says in a memo to directors that at this rate of consumption, the fuel budget will be overspent by more than 450,000 dollars by the end of the fiscal year.

He says many departments and agencies have asked for substantial amounts of gas coupons, however they must minimise their use to avoid a huge deficit in the current year budget.

He asked for cooperation in streamlining their gas usage.
