New PNG media body to counter threats to journalists

A new Papua New Guinea media body says it will try to impose a 'blackout' on media coverage of people or organisations that threaten journalists.

The interim chairman of the PNG Media Workers' Association, Susuve Laumaea, says it will represent people across the media spectrum, from journalists to public relations and advertising.

He says there's a need for a body in PNG that can stand up for journalists when they face abuses, and a media ban is not uncommon in other parts of the world.

"Well someone abuses a member of the media and we think that person does not deserve publicity or media coverage we try to talk with the media organisation, the political organisation or trade union or whoever - individuals - [and] give them a blackout so they don't get publicity."
