In Samoa, a post mortem of an eight year-old girl who died shortly after she was assaulted by her teacher shows she did not die from the beating.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Leaupepe Fatu Pula, says the post mortem showed the girl had a heart condition, and this was the suspected cause of death.

Police will now charge the 25 year old school teacher Telesia Funa'i for assault but not for assault causing death.

She is to reappear in Court next week.

The maximum penalty for assault is one year in prison.
