Fiji escapes more flood damage as Cyclone skirts country

8:34 am on 3 April 2012

Flood ravaged Fiji has been spared from the worst of Cyclone Daphne which was expected to compound problems for the country overnight.

Five people are known to have been killed in the floods in recent days, and three are still missing.

More damage was predicted overnight from Cyclone Daphne that was expected to skirt the country.

But the Fiji permanent secretary of information, Sharon Smith Johns, says the storm moved away at the last moment.

"The wind and the rain have been no where near what we expected. It's very calm in Nadi at the moment so it's calm. I know there hasn't been a lot of damage, the rivers haven't been flooded again so I think we've got off lucky and now we can actually start to move ahead and do the big clean up in Fiji."

Sharon Smith Johns says about eight thousand people remain in evacuation centres.
