The Papua New Guinea police chief Tom Kulunga says nearly 9 thousand personnel from Police, Defence and Correctional Services are expected to provide security for this year's election.

Mr Kulunga made his remarks at the police's National Election Preparatory Conference in Port Moresby.

The delegates were also told by the Deputy Electoral Commissioner, John Kalamoro, that the Commission was confident it was ready to hold the elections.

He says the common roll should be ready well before polling starts in late June.

Commissioner Kulunga thanked the government for initial funding and says he's confident there will be more.

He says he wants a trouble free, safe, free and fair election at which all eligible citizens can choose the leaders of their choice.
