Call for more blood donors in Samoa

4:20 pm on 27 March 2012

The Samoa Red Cross has held a workshop to try and encourage voluntary blood donations.

The programme manager for the Samoa Red Cross, Apineru Wright, says they need people to give blood voluntarily because during emergencies, relatives of patients are being asked to donate blood.

In some instances if blood from the hospital is used, relatives are later asked to reimburse the donated units.

The Red Cross says people are only donating blood because there's a monetary reward, but a system should be in place for voluntary blood donors.

It says the plan would also ensure the testing of donated blood.
