Series leaders and defending champions New Zealand and closest rivals Fiji both got off to strong starts as the sixth leg of the Sevens World Series got underway in Hong Kong.

The Kiwis cruised through 29-5 against the USA, while Fiji crushed Scotland 39-5.

The other former champions - Samoa, Australia and England - packed into three pools in a revised format also won before a record first-day crowd of over 39-thousand people.

Samoa took on crowd-favourites Kenya and worked hard for their 19-7 win.

On Saturday Wales will try to get back on track against top opponents New Zealand, while Fiji take on France, and England clash with Samoa.
