Sport: Solomon Islands keen to keep London dream alive

11:16 am on 16 March 2012

The Solomon Islands team is determined to halt a run of second-best finishes at the Olympic qualifying football tournament, which begins in Taupo on Friday.

The Solympics team play Fiji in the first match of the day, beginning at midday local time.

Solomon Islands finished runners-up in the Olympic qualifying event four years ago and have included eight players from the team which also finished second at last year's Oceania Under 20s Championship.

Coach Luke Eroi says motivation is high within the squad to go one better.

"That's the opportunity that the players like to be in, the Olympic qualifiers, because we want to play against the big names in the world."

Maybe there's a chance of winning this tournament and going off to the Olympics.
