6.4 quake near PNG's New Britain region

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake has struck Papua New Guinea.

No tsunami warning was immediately issued and there were no early reports of damage.

The US Geological Survey says the quake hit the New Britain region just after 7am local time at a depth of 48 kilometres, 204km southwest of the township of Rabaul and 598km from the Port Moresby.
