Media group condemns threats against PNG journalist

The Pacific Freedom Forum has condemned the grenade threat made against a Papua New Guinea journalist by police officers last week.

Post Courier Business Editor, Patrick Talu, was shown a hand grenade by a policeman who was armed with an M16 rifle, and ordered to leave Port Moresby's Unagi Oval or be blown up.

He had been covering a protest involving landowners concerned at aspects of the controversial LNG project.

The chair of the Pacific Freedom Forum, Titi Gabi, says decisive action has to be taken by the government and PNG Media Council to stamp out the blatant and dangerous disregard of the rule of law.

She says it is alarming that the PNG political leadership has yet to discipline those involved in an escalating trend of threats to journalists.
