Group applauds emphasis on participation in Fiji constitution review

Fiji's Citizens Constitutional Forum is pleased at the emphasis placed on participation in Fiji's upcoming constitutional review.

The interim government has announced a timetable for the review and three members of the five-person Constitution Commission.

CCF's Chief Executive Reverend Akuila Yabaki says the interim government has made a move in the right direction by basing the process on a recently-launched international guide to constitution-making, authored by international experts.

He says it is also significant that one of the guide's authors, Professor Yash Ghai, will chair the Constitution Commission.

"The fact that he's an author of this important publication, Constitution-Making and Reform, that is important, especially the emphasis placed on participation. We haven't had that degree of participation in past constitutions in this country."

Reverend Akuila Yabaki says Professor Ghai was involved in the 1997 constitution, abrogated three years ago.
