Plans are afoot to build a 60-million US dollar beverage bottling plant in New Caledonia's north.

The company Le Froid says it has bought 370 hectres of land near Pouembout where it wants to build a 10,000 square metre plant.

According to the local newspaper, Les Nouvelles Caledoniennes the project is the most significant investment in the province, next to the giant Koniambo nickel project.

The company says it has already spent two million dollars planning the venture.

It says it expects to produce 10 million litres of drinks each year, using new techniques not seen in the South Pacific.
