PNG police threaten journalist with grenade

10:44 am on 9 March 2012

A Papua New Guinea journalist says police assaulted him and threatened to blow him up with a hand grenade.

Patrick Talu, who is the business editor for the South Pacific Post, says the threat was made by a policeman at Unagi Oval in the presence of about 20 20 fully armed policemen from the Mt Hagen-based mobile squad.

Mr Talu has told the Post Courier that the police were upset with the media after the paper's front page pictures showed police chasing landowners in a crackdown in the capital.

He has called for an investigation and for the dismissal of the policeman who threatened him with the grenade.
