The Suva based University of the South Pacific is sponsoring students from Christchurch and Japan so they can attend the USP.

It is part of the USP's effort to help support the victims of the disasters in Japan, New Zealand and in Fiji itself.

The university held a fundraising dinner this week involving diplomats, the heads of international and regional organisations, and representatives from the public and private sectors.

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Rajesh Chandra says the university felt the need to assist in some way so three students from Christchurch and two from Japan have been sponsored to study at USP.

He says universities are privileged places and showing compassion and humanity is a very important part of what they should be doing.

Dr Chandra says the initiative is a small token to reciprocate the generosity that is often shown by Fiji's neighbours during natural disasters in Fiji.
