Vanuatu has signed up to a New Caledonia conservation initiative which is hoped to be extended across the Pacific.

Known as One Tree, One Day, One Life, the programme involves planting as many trees as inhabitants each year in each country or territory in the Pacific.

It aims to harmonise sustainable development activities in the region in line with the recommendations of the United Nations conference Rio+20.

It also aims to enhance the visibility of Pacific environmental issues and encourage countries in the region to ratify and adhere to international commitments on biodiversity.

The project will cover 21 countries and territories in the Pacific.
