Fiji regime urged not to let floods get in way of consultations

A civic education group in Fiji has urged the interim government not to divert its attention from consultations for the new constitution, despite disastrous flooding.

An announcement is expected this week from the regime on the timetable and method for consultations as well as the make-up of a Constitutional Commission.

The regime had earlier said flooding and continuous bad weather had caused complications.

Reverend Akuila Yabaki of the Citizens' Constitutional Forum says the process for developing a constitution should begin immediately in order to meet the deadline set for holding democratic elections in September 2014.

"The floods should not be used as a veneer of reasoning to say that, oh we can defer this. I mean we ourselves have had to defer some of our own work to move in flood areas but that shouldn't be seen as any obstacle."
