Another 56 Fiji workers sacked over sick leave scam

Fiji's ministry of works has sacked a further 56 employees over a sick leave scam.

FBC News reports that the latest batch of termination letters was sent after the ministry sacked 58 others for the same reason late last year.

The reports say investigations found that workers from as far away as Navua were producing sick sheets from the same doctor in Nausori without getting examined.

The doctor implicated in the scam voluntarily ceased practicing when the scam was uncovered.

The ministry's Permanent Secretary Commander Francis Kean says the dismissals were necessary to bring about an honest public service.

Interviews have begun for the recruitment of replacement workers.
