Solomon Islands government is to rent solar power systems to up to two thousand rural households.
It is to get nearly four million US dollars from the Pacific Environment Community Fund, which is funded by Japan.
Japan has provided 66 million US dollars for Forum Island countries for either solar power generation or desalination plants.
The Solomons' permanent secretary for the Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification, Henry Pika, says they will rent the solar home systems to eligible rural households.
The initiative is expected to expand rural electrification to 2000 unelectrified households in 20 communities, benefitting some 10,600 people in the Solomon Islands.
Most Solomon Islanders use kerosene as the primary source of energy for basic lighting.
