Tahiti court upholds decolonisation resolution

French Polynesia's administrative court has rejected an opposition bid to nullify a resolution passed by the assembly which seeks the territory's reinscription on the UN decolonisation list.

In a surprise move, the court didn't uphold the expert advice which suggested that the resolution be declared void.

It did, however, say the resolution adopted by the pro-independence majority last year only had the nature of a wish.

The opposition took legal action after claiming that in the voting process all basic rules were violated.

Its lawyer also argued that submitting the resolution to the United Nations was an infringement of France's rights in terms of foreign policy.
