Tonga speaker says no public funds used for his wedding

Tonga's Speaker, Lord Lasike, has told Parliament that no public money was spent on his recent wedding in Las Vegas.

Radio Tonga says he was responding to newspaper articles alleging government money was used for a private celebration.

In November, Lord Lasike, who is facing a charge of illegally possessing ammunition, broke his bail conditions when he hopped off a parliamentary trip to Israel and stayed in the US to get married.

Lord Lasike says he spent his own money, adding that he has the freedom to use it and spend it on his wedding.

He says the travel allowance he had for Israel wouldn't even have covered the cost of the wedding dress.
