American Samoa governor allows controversial freezer for cannery

A lease has been signed between StarKist Samoa and the American Samoa Government for space on the main dock in Fagatogo to build a new cold

storage facility for the cannery.

Governor Togiola Tulafono says he has signed the lease despite opposition

from a group of people who were opposed to building the freezer at the

proposed site.

Among those opposing the location is a leading matai of Fagatogo village, Afoa Moega Lutu, who's presented the company with a petition signed by more than 500 people, who want the freezer built somewhere else.

They say the freezer will result in the centre of town smelling of fish which will not be welcoming for cruise ship passnegers, while there'll be increased traffic congestion and pollution in the harbour.
