The French President has used his address to the French overseas territories to call for continuity of their current status.
In remarks seen as directed against French Polynesia's leadership, Nicolas Sarkozy says that in his political life he has never allied himself to any political party advocating independence.
Speaking in French Guyana, he went on to say that he belongs to a political family which never considered as its duty to accompany overseas territories towards independence.
Referring to French Polynesia, he says there have been several reforms to create stability, adding that its political class also needs to assume responsibility.
Mr Sarzoky says despite his affection for French Polynesia, he has not visited the territory during his tenure but will address it within the next few days.
