Two men die in Fiji flooding

12:15 pm on 24 January 2012

Two men are known to have died as a result of flooding in Fiji.

The Ministry of Information says flood waters are slowly rising in Nadi and western parts of the country and authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation.

The Ministry's Permanent Secretary Sharon Smith-Johns says there have been two flood casualties to date.

"One was a farmer in Ba. And there was also a farmer in Viti Levu on Sunday. Both of these were farmers trying to rescue animals from the flood waters, which is very unfortunate."

Sharon Smith Johns says Nadi airport remains open but schools in the flood affected areas are closed.
