Tonga speaker due in court on ammunition charge

5:09 am on 23 January 2012

The Speaker of Tonga's parliament, Lord Lasike, will appear in court on Friday charged with unlawful possession of ammunition.

Lord Lasike was arrested for breach of bail at Fua'amotu International Airport when he returned from a two-month stay in the United States last week.

Matangi Tonga reports Lord Lasike is again free on bail and Justice Robert Shuster has given parties a week to go over the written indictment.

On Friday, he is expected to enter a plea and choose whether he wants to be tried by a jury or judge alone, before a trial date is set.
