CCF calls for review of Fiji's new Public Order Act

The Citizens Constitutional Forum in Fiji has called for a review of the new Public Order Decree to prevent any possible abuse.

Its CEO, the Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says last week's lifting of emergency rules raised expectations that people would be able to take part in discussions and consultations about a new constitution without fear.

But the Reverend Yabaki says the new decree is a bit of a nonsense as there is no space for debate, given the continued requirements to obtain permits.

He says he will be meeting police tomorrow to seek clarification while asking for some of the police powers to be reconsidered.

"Keeping wide-ranging powers in the hands of individual police officers could lead to abuse as well against targetted individuals and groups, and that should be reconsidered."
