Solomons issues boat safety reminder

4:15 pm on 6 January 2012

The director of Marine Search and Rescue in Solomon Islands is reminding the public about proper boat safety, as the search continues for a missing man at sea.

Solo Ngatonga, from Wagina Choiseul Province, went missing in the early hours of Monday, while on board a bray boat.

Mr Ngatonga had been drinking with his friends at Nukumaroro in Wagina, before deciding to return to his family at Hay Cook Island.

Edward Tokuru says taking basic precautions is a must for anyone out at sea.

"Boaties must make sure they are well equipped before going out to sea particularly in this wet season. And also it is important to notify others in the communities, where a person is going, and when he is expected to arrive in another village or so, so that they can be easily located if something happens."

Edward Tokuru says the search and rescue effort was only able to get underway once authorities were notified by the family on Wednesday.
