New Caledonia town loses shop amid alleged death threats

A town in the north of New Caledonia Hienghene has lost its only grocery shop after its owner gave in to alleged death threats and closed the business.

The territory's only daily newspaper says the owner was from the French Caribbean island of Martinique and was married to a woman from Lifou.

He has told the paper that he had been in New Caledonia for more than 40 years and opened the shop in 2004.

He says he was harassed for being an outsider but stayed because he provided a much needed service in Hienghene where his wife worked as a nurse for 17 years.

He says they will move to Martinique.
