Rarotonga in the Cook Islands gets rough weather

5:36 pm on 30 December 2011

The Cook Islands capital, Rarotonga, has been battered by strong winds and heavy rain this week.

Gust of up to 90 kilometres per hour hit the island, with more than 60 millimetres of rain falling within one six hour period.

The high winds caused some minor damage to homes, mostly with windows broken by falling tree branches.

Our correspondent reports that the worst of the weather came at low tide, limiting the impact on beachfront properties.
