The new All Blacks defence coach Aussie McLean says the experience he gained working with Manu Samoa has given him a strong understanding of what's required to be successful in international rugby.

He joins a new-look All Blacks coaching panel, which features Steve Hansen in the top job and former Chiefs coach Ian Foster as his assistant.

Aussie McLean's appointment follows three years with Manu Samoa, first as a technical advisor and then as an assistant coach.

He says that time, which included the recent World Cup in New Zealand, gave him a strong grounding in international rugby.

"I've been to a few places and coached international teams and the world cup was fantastic for us. We didn't have the resources really that the All Blacks have got but we got pretty close to Wales and South Africa so I'm really proud of what we did as a team - not just me, the team - and it's certainly been I think a big help in sort of bridging the gap really."
