Solomons PM orders clamp-down on phone abuse

10:13 am on 16 December 2011

Reports from Solomon Islands say the prime minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, has ordered that all government paid mobile phones be disconnected at midday.

The Solomon Star reports that the move is a cost-cutting measure, with Mr Lilo claiming that a majority of users is not entitled to have such phones.

The paper says Solomon Telekom has been advised to switch off all the phones and to then reconnect only those on a list of approved users.

The prime minister has also ordered staff at his office and the National Bureau for Social and Economic Reforms to surrender hired vehicles by midday.

A list is being compiled to identify those eligible for a government-funded rental car.
