CNMI Congressman Gregorio Kilili Sablan is seeking a congressional hearing on the high cost to the territory of the migration of people from Freely Associated States.

A recent federal report cited weaknesses in the assessment of the impact of migration from those states to the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Guam, and Hawaii.

Freely Associated States include the Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, and Palau.

Congressman Sablan and four other House members have called for the hearing on the report, which showed

that between 2004 and 2010, the CNMI, Guam, and Hawaii spent about $1 billion US providing health, education, and services to FAS migrants.

The U.S. government provided only $210 million in reimbursements.
